Crowns and Bridges in Middletown and Newport, RI

Going to the dentist for a crown is like wrapping a brand new skin around your tooth. Dental crowns – often referred to as “caps” – are durable, protective coverings that wrap around the visible portions of natural teeth to strengthen and improve their appearance.

Reasons to talk to your dentist about getting a dental crown:

  • You have a decayed or weakened tooth – crowns can prevent further cracking and breakage.
  • To cover teeth already broken or worn, including those with large fillings that populate most of your natural tooth.
  • To secure a dental bridge.
  • For a more attractive smile – crowns fix discolored/disfigured teeth.
  • To cover dental implants and restore the natural functioning of lost teeth.
  • To protect a sensitive tooth after a root canal.

The Procedure: What to Expect When you Visit the Dentist for Crowns

Your first step is to have x-rays to determine if the roots and bones of your teeth can support a dental crown. In some case, advanced tooth decay may require a root canal before your dentist can place a crown.

Once your dentist determines you are ready for a crown, expect at least two office visits.

The First Visit:

1. Your tooth and surrounding gum tissue is numbed to ensure a painless procedure.
2. To accommodate the new crown, your dentist gently reshapes the sides and chewing surface of your tooth.
3. An impression of your new tooth is captured and a customized crown is manufactured and ready for fitting in about three weeks.

The Second Visit:

1. Your dentist will examine your gums to make sure they are healthy enough to support cementation of the crown.

The new crown is fitted and cemented into place.

Dental Bridges

A dental bridge does what it says – it bridges the space between missing teeth so you can smile, eat and speak comfortably and with confidence. Bridges are simply false teeth that your dentist places in the gap and then cements to the existing teeth on either side. Bridges also prevent the hollowing of cheeks that are caused by missing teeth, and a bridge will help keep teeth from moving around.

The Procedure

Once your dentist determines you are ready for a bridge, expect at least two office visits.

The First Visit:

1. Your dentist prepares the teeth on either side of the missing tooth teeth, called abutments, for crowns by removing the enamel and reshaping them to accommodate the crown.
2. An impression of the area is made and used to build a custom bridge, which takes about three weeks.
3. Your dentist will fit you with a temporary bridge to protect exposed teeth and gums.

The Second Visit:

1. Your dentist will examine your gums to make sure they are healthy enough to support cementation of the bridge.
2. At your last visit, the bridge will be tried in and cemented in place.
